About 10 years ago, Samantha was extremely sick. She decided that she wanted to die and the pneumonia's started. At least once a month, she was in the hospital with pneumonia. Each time she was put on IV antibiotics and sent home for me to care for. At that time, I did not have nurses to help care for her, so I had to learn to administer the IV antibiotics.
After about 5 years
of this, I was getting really burned out. I had no help from family or friends. One day, I was injecting a solution into the IV and forgot to remove the air from the syringe. This scared me very badly. I have since learned that I could have put a whole syringe of air in to her vein and it not hurt her, but at that time, I did not know that. Since that time, I have refused to do any IV's and said that I would never do so again.
Well, never say never . . . When Samantha came home this time on IV nutrition and IV antibiotics I thought there would be no problems since her nursing hours were increased to 24 a day. I wouldn't have to do anything with the IV since she had nurses to do it. It turned out that the nursing service would not allow the LVN's to touch the IV nutrition, only an RN, which meant that they could not give any IV medication or change the IV nutrition each day. Luckily I have an RN caring for Samantha and she spent a lot of extra time without pay for the first few
days coming over to do the medications. After a few days, she could not continue missing so much sleep.
Guess who had to start doing IV medications? I took a deep breath and told myself that I had no other choice but to do it myself. I had to let go of all those old fears that I would accidentally kill her. It was not an easy thing to do, but I
really had no choice. Luckily, I only had to do it for a few days before the nursing service decided to allow the LVN's to administer the medication.
It was necessary for me to learn the lesson that I could do it. By saying that I would 'never do it again' I drew that lesson to me. What we resist we bring to ourselves. So watch what you say you will never do, because you just may find yourself doing that very thing.
